Rachel, E-RYT 500, and certified yogahour teacher, is the ever-hopeful and exceedingly proud owner of Balancing Monkey Yoga in Hilo, Hawaii. She stepped on her mat in 2001 and felt she found her home. She began teaching in 2010, and hasn’t stopped since. She received her yogahour certification in 2014 after studying with Darren Rhodes for 200 hours. Her passion, studentship, aloha-spirit, and commitment to practice shine through in every class she teaches.
Heidi, E-RYT 500, is a dedicated hatha yoga student and teacher. She believes that a commitment to yoga practice is an opportunity to develop steadiness, increase comfort, and expand awareness. Heidi has a passion for teaching basic yoga poses as gateways to change. She is also the Studio Manager at Balancing Monkey Yoga.
Danielle has been practicing Yoga for over 15 years, teaching since 2009, and is currently pursuing a certification in advanced vinyasa and therapeutics with Tiffany Cruikshank. She enjoys helping others to deepen and expand their practice with her creative, tenacious, and playful approach to asana. Danielle believes that Yoga is a powerful tool to explore both physical and emotional wounds and find liberation from injuries.
Darien first found yoga in 2013 as an undergrad at UC Irvine in Southern California. She loved it so much that she got her first 200 Hr. certification after just 1 year on the mat. Initially she had planned to pursue a path in law to help others, but as time went on she felt more and more connected to the idea of impacting those around her directly by guiding them through "health AND self discovery". Darien describes what Yoga means to her as a blend of strength and grace that gives individuals the tools to find a deep sense of awareness and peace in all aspects of life. You can expect to flow through a fun yet challenging sequence set to an elevating playlist in Darien's class. Come relax. Come play. Come be yourself.
Eugene Eckman is native to the Big Island, where he initially found basic yoga postures and breathing techniques to enhance his abilities as a surfer and free-diver. In 2003, after suffering a severe rib injury, he experienced the physical and mental healing powers of yoga while on the road to recovery. In 2009 Eugene became an RYT at The Yoga Oasis, and has been teaching since. He continues to study with Master Teachers Sri Dharma Mittra, Heather Heintz, and others. When not doing yoga, Eugene is still an avid surfer and free-diver.
Greta began practicing yoga in 2009 believing that everyone benefits physically as well as emotionally from a regular yoga discipline. Inspired by the sweat and repetition of her former hot Hatha practice, harmonized with the seamless transitions of Vinyasa, she pursued her teaching certification with Balancing Monkey in 2018. Her classes are designed to be accessible yet challenging... utilizing mindful movement convergent with stillness to facilitate growth of body and mind.
Linda has been practicing yoga for over 20 years. She obtained a 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Certification from Aura Wellness Center, Attleboro, MA, and has continued to add 75 hours of training from Yoga Centered and Balancing Monkey Yoga in Hilo. She is passionate about bringing yoga to all persuasions, especially seniors and those who wish for better movement and peace in their daily lives. Her yoga teaching emphasizes breath work, correct alignment, stretching and safe practices.
Lisa has been practicing yoga since 2003, when she moved to Hawai’i to study yoga at Kalani Honua. She received her first training from Kathy Elder and later received her 200RYT from Balancing Monkey. Lisa believes that yoga brings equilibrium to the mind, body, and spirit. She is passionate about making yoga accessible to people of all abilities. Her hope is that the practice of yoga will facilitate wellness for her students and that they will find joy in the lessons that yoga can teach them.
Masae was born and raised in Japan. She moved to Hilo in 2006 and started practicing yoga in 2010. She completed her 200 hour RYT in 2013. For her, yoga is a part of her life as same as brushing my teeth every day. She loves to practice with different teachers, students and various styles of yoga. There is no border line for yoga because everything is yoga to her. She worked for Disney in Japan and Florida for 10 years. Wherever she can practice yoga is the happiest place on earth.
Sarah Goldman was born on this beautiful Big Island with a love of movement. Gymastics and dance were two of her favorite things until she discovered yoga. Yoga has been a huge blessing in her life. She studied Ashtanga yoga with Colee Garr and Noah William, Acroyoga with Jenny Sauer-Klein and Jason Nemer, and received her 200 hour certification under Heather Heintz. Sarah is enormously grateful for the opportunity to share her love of practice with others. As a teacher she aims to give students an enjoyable experience so that they may be inspired and encouraged to begin their own love affair with yoga.
Steve has practiced Iyengar Yoga for almost 20 years. He has taught classes for 13 years and became certified to teach Iyengar Yoga in 2008. He returns to India regularly to study at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute where he was fortunate to assist BKS Iyengar in the medical classes. Steve continues to assist the Iyengars in the medical classes while at the institute to learn. Steve is excited for the opportunity to teach at the Balancing Monkey!
Vicky is a teacher of 20 years, certified in Pilates Matwork. Her background as a professional dancer gives her a unique insight into movement. A dedicated Yogi for the past 10 years, beginning with Heather Heintz and receiving RYT-200 through Danielle Makaike and Rachel Calvert. Vicky draws inspiration from her teachers in infinite gratitude.
Yumi Nagayoshi was born and raised in Fukuoka, Japan. She started practicing yoga in Japan, and became a dedicated practitioner after moving to Hilo in 2011. Under the guidance of Heather Heintz, Yumi was certified as a RYT-200 yoga instructor. She has been studying Yin Yoga and completed Yin Yoga Teacher Trainings with Sarah Powers and Jo Phee. Mindfulness and YinYang concept in Chinese medicine are her strong interest. She works as a full time accounting clerk and enjoys Hula and practicing Japanese Tea Ceremony.
