Danielle has been practicing Yoga for over 15 years, teaching since 2009, and is currently pursuing a certification in advanced vinyasa and therapeutics with Tiffany Cruikshank. She enjoys helping others to deepen and expand their practice with her creative, tenacious, and playful approach to asana. Danielle believes that Yoga is a powerful tool to explore both physical and emotional wounds and find liberation from injuries. She is also a co-owner of the Balancing Monkey.
RACHEL, E-RYT-200, RYT-500, and certified yogahour teacher, is the ever-hopeful and exceedingly proud co-owner of Balancing Monkey Yoga in Hilo, Hawaii. She stepped on her mat in 2001 and felt she found her home. She began teaching in 2010, and hasn’t stopped since. She received her yogahour certification in 2014 after studying with Darren Rhodes for 200 hours. She continues to study with Darren Rhodes. Her passion, studentship, aloha-spirit and commitment to practice shines through in every class she teaches.
Ceo teaches in the Iyengar tradition which emphasizes correct alignment to develop strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and more. The method aims to develop self-awareness through precision in movement and attention to the subtleties of body, breath, mind, and spirit. Ceo is a Certified Iyengar Yoga teacher in the introductory 2 level.
Cortney comes from a background of athletics and coaching. After many years of training she discovered the transformational power of Yoga at Balancing Monkey. It was from this love of practice that she completed her 200 hour RYT in 2012. She teaches from her heart and hopes to share the practice of Yoga in a safe and playful environment. She is honored and grateful to stand on the shoulders of her teachers and be a part of this ancient practice.
Eugene is native to the Big Island, where he initially found basic yoga postures and breathing techniques to enhance his abilities as a surfer and free-diver. In 2003, after suffering a severe rib injury, he experienced the physical and mental healing powers of yoga while on the road to recovery. In 2009 Eugene became an RYT at The Yoga Oasis, and has been teaching since. He continues to study with Master Teachers Sri Dharma Mittra, Heather Heintz, and others. When not doing yoga, Eugene is still an avid surfer and free-diver.
Katy has 14 years of experience and is currently enrolled in Integrative Yoga Therapy’s 1000-hour Yoga Therapist program. Helping students recognize their inherent wholeness, and interconnected nature of our physical, emotional and energetic layers is at the forefront of Katy’s teachings.
Kristen Coyle, E-RYT 500, is a devoted yoga practitioner, teacher, and yoga teacher trainer. She began her journey with yoga 14 years ago, and has been dedicated to the yogic path ever since. She has been teaching yoga for ten years, and offers on-going classes, workshops, and yoga teacher trainings at various locales around the world. Kristen integrates what she has studied into an alignment based, creative, physically challenging, and spiritually rooted practice. She weaves breathing exercises, chanting, and meditation into her offerings to assist in the unfolding process that is yoga. Beyond yoga, she is passionate about traveling, cooking organic gourmet food, dancing, and swimming in sacred waters.
Hannah came to yoga in a period of her life when change was arising. What yoga gave her was the strength to be vulnerable and allow change both on the yoga mat and off the mat. She finds yoga to be a reminder of her holoʻokoʻa (wholeness) and life’s ever-changing possibilities. Hannah’s yoga philosophy is that yoga is a life-long practice that connects us to our sacredness. She incorporates her yoga teachings into her activism work for women's rights and the Big Island community.
In addition to yoga, Hannah is a recent graduate from the University of Hawaii at Hilo with a B.A. in English and Women & Gender Studies. Hannah also attends The Bread Loaf School of English for her masters.
Heidi, RYT 500- EYRT 200, appreciates practice as an opportunity to tease edges, expand comfort zones, and chill out. She completed 500 hours of teacher training under the guidance and heart of Heather Heintz. Heidi lives with her husband and son in Honomu where they enjoy growing foods and flowers in the garden.
Lauren has been practicing yoga for over ten years. She completed her RYT at the Balancing Monkey studio in the winter of 2016. When not on the mat, she enjoys surfing, running and doing anything related with nature. She brings a playful philosophy to her yoga practice and hopes to share her passion with others.
Linda has been practicing yoga for over 20 years. She obtained a 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Certification from Aura Wellness Center, Attleboro, MA, and has continued to add 75 hours of training from Yoga Centered and Balancing Monkey Yoga here in Hilo. She is passionate about bringing yoga to all persuasions, especially seniors and those who wish for better movement and peace in their daily lives. Her yoga teaching emphasizes breath work, correct alignment, stretching and safe practices.
Liz's teaching style emphasizes proper alignment and safety within each posture, allowing for transformation in the mind and body. She creates space to encourage students to listen and connect to themselves, so that they can better serve their needs and those of others on and off the mat. Liz's classes are challenging and physical, while being centered on anatomical principles and intelligent sequencing. Liz's cueing style and anatomical approach provides a space for deeper connection between body and mind, supporting her students in their physical and emotional self-exploration and growth.
Masae was born and raised in Japan. She moved to Hilo in 2006 and started practicing yoga in 2010. She completed her 200 hour RYT in 2013. For her, yoga is a part of her life as same as brushing my teeth every day. She loves to practice with different teachers, students and various styles of yoga. There is no border line for yoga because everything is yoga to her. She worked for Disney in Japan and Florida for 10 years. Wherever she can practice yoga is the happiest place on earth.
Steve has practiced Iyengar Yoga for almost 20 years. He has taught classes for 13 years and became certified to teach Iyengar Yoga in 2008. He returns to India regularly to study at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute where he was fortunate to assist BKS Iyengar in the medical classes. Steve continues to assist the Iyengars in the medical classes while at the institute to learn. Steve is excited for the opportunity to teach at the Balancing Monkey!
Vicky is a teacher of 20 years, certified in Pilates Matwork, Vicky’s background as a professional dancer give her a unique insight into movement. A dedicated Yogi for the past 2 years, she draws inspiration from her yoga teachers.
Yumi Nagayoshi was born and raised in Fukuoka, Japan. She started practicing yoga in Japan, and became a dedicated practitioner after moving to Hilo in 2011. Under the guidance of Heather Heintz, Yumi was certified as a RYT-200 yoga instructor. She has been studying Yin Yoga and completed Yin Yoga Teacher Trainings with Sarah Powers and Jo Phee. Mindfulness and YinYang concept in Chinese medicine are her strong interest. She works as a full time accounting clerk and enjoys Hula and practicing Japanese Tea Ceremony.
